Lindisfarne

Monday 1st May 2023

It was a beautiful morning, and we were up early again, breakfast and headed to Lindisfarne, it’s a very short drive from the Barn at Beal, and across the causeway.

The causeway is narrow, space for a single vehicle with passing points, and it’s an impressive sight looking out across the sand to the left and right of the road as you cross.

It doesn’t take long, and only the first mile is the bit that is under water when the tide is high, still, a mile of road that is submerged twice a day is fascinating, and in the bright sunshine that we got when crossing, it was really beautiful.

You drive onto the island, and round to the main car park, they had good parking for motorhomes and campervans, and we paid our £8 for the five hours we’d spend on the island (we couldn’t leave ’til after 3pm) and it was around 10:20am.

We spent several hours wandering the a lot of the islands, from the Priory to the Castle and lime kilns, and the “Window on Wild Lindisfarne” room, it was cold and windy, but it is a great walk and a beautiful island.

We had coffee and a scone at Pilgrim’s coffee, and picked up some fudge, and wandered back to the van, out of the sun and wind, it was around 2:20pm by this point, we had a seat, and a read, the safe time to cross was around 3:05pm, so…we headed down, and got back to the mainland, by this time it was overcast and the view isn’t quite as impressive.

We were heading to Beadnell Bay next, and so, before departing I picked up a couple of local beers (including a Lindisfarne Stout) in the local shop, and we set off south, it was a fairly short drive.

The “Camping and Caravanning Club” do live up to their “friendly club” byline, and we were taken to the pitches quickly and found a good one, pitched up and set off for a wander along the beach.

We missed the Bay at Beadnell on our first walk, the beach was deserted, and beautiful clean sand, with a lot of seaweed.

Dinner, beer and sleep!
