Friday 8th August
It took over two hours to get to St Monans, we went the M8 route and it was pretty busy getting off at Edinburgh, presumably swelled by the Oasis gigs at Murrayfield.
We were then on the m90 and even getting across the Queensferry Crossing was slow going.
We did pass right by some of our favourite sites…Elie and Silverburn Park St Monans Holiday Park
When we booked (at the start of June) there was only one pitch remaining, H8 and we pitched up pretty easily, they have a water tap right beside the pitch which is handy for getting fresh water.
We were pitched up right beside the A917, but with the bed-end at the furthest point, sadly no view of the firth.
We popped round to the local Chinese takeaway, chicken satay and sweet and sour pork, it’s a quick walk back to the site and had a nice seat with our dinner outside.
I had a nice dark cherry stout from Wasted Degrees, surprisingly light on the cherry but a nice light stout.
It was a warmish but breezy evening, and a little noisy but it quietened down, and we got neighbours around 8:30pm.
It was getting cool and pretty windy so we headed in and sat reading until bedtime.
Saturday 9th August
We were up early, but it was raining lightly, so tea and a honey nut porridge in the van.
When the rain went off we pulled on our clothes and wandered towards Bowhouse through St Monans.
The tide was out and the boats in the harbour were resting in the mud, it was bright sunshine at this point, but windy and cool.
We arrived at Bowhouse at around 10:15 and it was busy but not mobbed, it’s a pretty easy walk from the site to Bowhouse along the main road, we fancied the walk through town.
We refreshed with a nice coffee or mocha along with a chocolate bun and pistachio croissant and millionaires shortcake, my favourite (as usual) was the millionaire’s shortcake.
There was a band coming on at 12pm, so we had decided to grab a beer (or wine) and get comfortable…the lunchtime rush made it very busy in the food area.
We opted to have lunch - mac and cheese, I went for smoked beef, pickles, onions and mayo on mine, while Gayle had crispy onions on hers, both were really nice, the smoked beef in particular was really good.
We then went shopping in the market, picked up a couple of black and white prints, and some charcuterie and cheese and oatcakes.
We sat outside reading, but it was a bit cold in the wind, so we headed in for a bit, and then went wandering through St Monans and found a chippy van…
Black pudding and sausage and chips and back to the van for dinner. The chippie was not bad, black pudding was nice, but expensive for a single sausage supper.
We spent the evening reading and relaxing until around 9pm when we went for a wander down to the harbour in the golden hour, it was chilly when we got back
Sunday 10th August
I woke around 4am because it was too warm, I had left the heating on - after putting it off I opened my window and got back to sleep (and slept through my chance to get a sunrise shot)
Woke again around 7:30am, it was sunny and wind had dropped so over for a shower and back with shorts on, it was a beautiful morning.
We wandered back down towards the harbour, it was very quiet and then onto the windmill at the salt pans, there were a number of folks swimming in the tidal pool just beside it, the sun was warm.
We were tempted to book another night and drive home early the next day…but it’s a 2hr+ drive so we decided against it, but that’s how nice the weather was.
After that, we headed back and packed up to be off site by 11am.
We’d definitely return, there’s not a lot on site, but it was clean and tidy, and relatively quiet (despite being beside the road).
