Walk to Gullane

Saturday 29th June 2024

We were up fairly early, and had a nice light break fast of cherry yoghurt and granola.

We set off with no particular plan, off down the path into town along the side of the beach, and then onto the sand.

It was very windy, but warm and sunny.

The tide was going out, so we walked along the receding waterline, and then into town.

We poked our heads into Bostock Bakery, but we weren’t hungry, and couldn’t make up our minds so…we set off again for the water.

We followed the John Muir Way again and I spotted a large flock of birds diving into the water just off the beach, not sure what they were, but with the strong winds, the spray looked pretty spectacular as they hit the water at speed.

There were also a lot of Blue jellyfish washed onto the sand.

We walked the beautiful Broad Sands and honestly, there were very few folks on the beach, mostly a few dog walkers, and a couple of families braving the elements.

The wind was so strong that the sand was stinging my legs as it blew at us, but it was a beautiful day otherwise.

We turned off the beach at Dirleton, we did manage to startle a pair of deer on the path up from the beach, looked like a doe and fawn.

We had a seat in the square at Dirleton and decided to press on to Gullane. We had lunch in Cherish on the main street (which we’d been to before), very nice soup and a great sandwich, definitely recommended.

We’d walked around 9 miles at this point, so we opted to get the bus back.

We jumped off the bus into a very busy North Berwick, and popped into the Tippecanoe Gallery and bought a selection of books:

After that, we were a bit parched, so popped into The Auld Hoose, where I had a few pints of Belhaven Best, and Gayle had some pints of Cider.

We had a great time, but decided to head back to the site to drop off stuff and rest weary feet.

We picked up something for dinner (lamb kebabs) to accompany some cous cous we’d brought from home, I cooked these up in the Trangia pan, it definitely dealt with the wind far better than the Cadac, but it’s also smaller.

Also, I removed the skewers first (to help them fit into the pan) and they broke up in the pan more than I wanted.

Otherwise, it tasted good, accompanied by some hummus and falafels.

By this time it was quite late, so we watched a couple of episodes of the new series of “The Boys” on prime before making up the bed to pass out.
