Vindolanda

Saturday 8th June 2024

We were up late, healthy(ish) breakfast, dark chocolate granola with cherry yoghurt, really tasty, good van breakfast, keeping the breakfast pack ’til tomorrow.

We left the campsite just before 9am, out onto the road and wait for the 122 bus and down to Vindolanda, we paid for the the ticket for both Vindolanda and the Roman army museum, discount for both and for getting the bus there.

We’d been to Housesteads last time, and it’s great, and looking at the layout of the excavated fort, Vindolanda seems to be pretty similar, but the museum elevates it way beyond that, it’s an amazing museum, lots of unique items and well presented, a particular highlight is the collection of letters which offer a fascinating insight into the day-to-day lives of folks in the early part of the first millenium.

We had lunch in the on-site museun, very nice rolls with chicken and bacon in the sun. After that, we got the bus towards the Sill and the Roman Wall day, which was just wrapping up, it looked to be mostly a sheep show, nice view from Steelrigg car park tho'.

We wandered down to Twice brewed and ordered a tasty Twice Brewed hazy IPA and cider for Gayle, we had a sandwich for late lunch too and headed back to the site with the bus from the Sill.

A relaxing evening watching the Waitress, both a bit wind burnt (maybe some sun too).
