Walking to Aberlady

Saturday 13th April 2024

We got up around 8am, and had a light breakfast of cherry yoghurt and dark chocolate granola.

I prepped sandwiches for lunch, and we set off through Prestonpans along the John Muir Way.

It was bright but windy, and a big chunk of the walk is along the shore of the Firth of Forth, with East Fife on the opposite shore.

This is one of our favourite places, and it’s a really nice walk, with a mix of road walking, beaches, dunes and some forest walking.

We stopped for lunch in the Longniddry Bents and then had coffee and cake from the Alandas chippie van.

We had intermittent rain, and then bright sunshine, and constant wind, but there’s lots to see, from the murals in Prestongrange (including John Muir), the harbour in Port Seton, Seton Sands Caravan park, Longniddry, and the forest walk between Gosford House and Aberlady.

The tide was mostly out, so there were several large sandy bays, and there are toilets in the car parks which is great.

We arrived in Aberlady after around 10 miles, not a lot to see in Aberlady, the tide was out, but there was a warning about shifting sands.

Heavy cold rain came on while we were there, so we ran to the nearest bus-stop, and got the 124 bus back towards Prestongrange, popped into a nearby Scotmid Co-Op to supplement dinner and headed back to the van.

We were both tired, so light dinner, bit of TV and crashed around 9:30pm.

It was a really enjoyable walk, beautiful views out over the firth, lots of good information boards, well-signposted, and good facilities, definitely recommended.
