Rainy day in Glen Nevis

Saturday 30th March 2024

It rained quite heavily overnight, I was awoken by the noise of the rain on the roof, but got back to sleep.

We finally got up at 8:30am, and Gayle volunteered to go to the on-site shop for breakfast, returning with rolls and egg, sausage, potato scone and bacon, very tasty.

We got boots on and set off for a walk up the glen, it was quite wet underfoot, and we wandered for a couple of miles then headed back towards the Glen Nevis Visitor Centre.

The Centre was closed (reopens later in April), but the car park was full, lots of folks heading up the mountains.

It started to rain, so we decided to head back towards the van, via the excellent onsite shop, lots of good stuff in there, including wine and beer!

Lunch was cheese and wine and crackers, with a nice bottle of wine.

We had picked up cheeses in the Green Welly, “Highland fine cheeses company Brie” and “Orkney smoked cheddar ploughman’s pickle” both very nice, washed down with a nice bottle of Malbec.

It rained quite heavily throughout the afternoon, which is a shame after yesterday’s sunnier weather.

Around 6pm, we headed out for dinner to the onsite bar/restaurant (the sign says its 500m from the entrance, but if you go out via the back gate it’s a 5 minute walk), it was mobbed, and we couldn’t get a table ’til later…

Back to the van, read a bit, and then back to the restaurant, this time, we had a table!

The food was pretty good, I had the chicken tenders for a starter, and they were really good, the dip was tasty, the batter was light, and the chicken wasn’t over done.

Gayle had the soup which was apparently very good.

Gayle opted for the burger for her dinner, apparently it was nice, we both love a good burger, and we cook a good burger too…so, maybe it was good, but not exceptional.

I opted for the pork tomahawk with fricassee, and the fricassee was amazing, really tasty, nice bits of chorizo, really enjoyed it,

The pork was pretty good, I had an amazing pair of tomahawks in Keswick several years ago, and this wasn’t as good as that, but it was still a nice bit of meat.

For dessert, I had a really nice rice pudding with apples and crumble on top, and Gayle had a light sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which was apparently very good.

A pretty good meal, not over-priced, and the atmosphere inside was really nice, definitely worth a visit.

Fortunately we had made up the bed before we headed out, so we got back and flopped into bed.
