Silverdyke Caravan Park

Friday 8th March 2024

We didn’t get away during February, so we were excited to get away at the start of the new season.

I’d spotted a place called Bowhouse on our way down the Fife tourist road in 2022, and I had looked up their website and spotted that there was a market on in early March…Silverdyke Caravan Park was on our list of places to go, and it was opening up the same weekend as Bowhouse, so…decision made!

It’s about a two hour drive to get there, and we arrived in the early evening, after parking up I jumped out to setup the water and electric (they are all fully-serviced pitches), and the cold wind hit me.

It was bitterly cold…took my breath away, but we got pitched up and fairly level and set off to explore (and get dinner), we wandered down into Cellardyke which is just below the site, there’s a gate that leads out and down to the harbour.

We wandered through past the harbour, and found The Haven Bar which was a nice respite out of the cold.

We had a great meal here, I had the haggis bon bons, Gayle had pepper soup with bread and for mains I had a nice burger while Gayle had a great looking steak pie.

The food was tasty, service was good and the Guinness was a nice pint…for dessert we had a sticky toffee pudding and affogato.

The food was definitely worth it, really nice looking place, maybe a bit cold for the beer-garden, but I’m sure it’d be great in Summer.

Warmed against the wind, we headed back to the van and relaxed for the evening.

We were up at 8am on the Saturday morning, breakfast was RidgeMonkey omelettes, bacon, peppers, mushrooms and eggs cooked in the smallest RidgeMonkey sandwich toaster, served in a wrap.

These are really easy to make, and we’d brought the ingredients with us, will definitely make them again!

We set off around 10am to walk along the coastal walk to Bowhouse, the route follows through Anstruther, Pittenweem and then St Monans, along the coast, we did make a wrong turn and end up walking along the A917 for a bit, but that just means that we need to do it again, it’s a really nice walk, and lots of interesting things to see, the wind was cold (and was at our backs for the walk), and the water was being churned into whitewater, but it was a great wander along the coast.

Bowhouse Market was worth the trip, lots of great food, we were fairly restrained but still managed to pick up some chocolates, cheesecake and sausage rolls.

We wanted food, but it was pretty busy, so…decided to wander back to St Monans, not a lot of options there, and there was a bus back to Anstruther in a few minutes, so we jumped the bus back.

Lunch in the Ox and Anchor in Anstruther, which was great, really good smashburgers, and their “dirty fries” were great too, definitely recommended!

We wandered back to the van, and watched some TV and read until bedtime, we could hear the roar of the waves pounding the coastline from the van.

It was a fairly quiet night, and we slept well, we were up early and after scone for breakfast, we had to head home to see family.

Silverdyke is a good site in a great location, we’ll be back to walk more of the East Fife coastal path hopefully in warmer weather.
