Red Wharf Bay

Thursday 25th January 2024

Up and used up some yoghurt and granola for breakfast, walking gear on and down to the beach.

It’s a fairly short walk from the campsite down to sand, but it was high tide so no walk round the bay for us.

It was cold and grey, but dry at that point.

Walked along the main road, mostly on pavements, popped into the boathouse for caramel cake ‘n coffee and mocha and Bakewell tart, very windy and a bit of rain, looked like it’d be nice in summer.

There’s also the Ship Inn down by the water, but it looked to be closed, perhaps for the season.

I did notice that there is no campervan parking at all down by water front, no overnight parking, and no campervan parking which felt very unwelcoming.

As we walked back from the waterside to the A5025, the rain and wind returned.

We got to Benllech, and wandered down to the beach front, looked like a nice beach, and would’ve been a nice walk to here round the bay at low tide, picked up the obligatory fridge magnet from Anglesey.

We wanted to go to the Bull Inn for dinner, so we opted for a light lunch from the Tesco, and then the rain worsened.

We got the bus back to Pentraeth, oddly the bus stop is out in the open and there’s a shelter maybe 25 metres away, so you can stand out of the rain until a few minutes before the bus is due, but you have to leave the shelter to wait for the bus.

We had a quiet afternoon in the van, reading and watching some youtube.

In the evening, the wind was worsening, but we headed round to the Bull Inn in the dark with head torches, rain and wind blowing us along.

Dinner was good, I had the ham and eggs with chips, which was really good, and Gayle had a pie ’n’ chips, good honest pub food.

For the first time tho’, we could hear folks chatting in Welsh, between the staff and customers, this was the first time we’d heard any Welsh spoken, apart from the on train announcements.

It was a reminder that Wales is not England…
