Sunday 21st January 2024
We got up fairly early, knowing that it was due to be stormy, we had an incentive to get out and about.
Reading the information provided onsite, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct was closed because it was drained for some work.
But, just outside the campsite, you can walk down to the Llangollen Canal, and you can walk through the Chirk tunnel.
It’s pitch dark for a bit, so I’d recommend taking a torch (we didn’t think we’d be going, and my iphone light worked well enough), it’s mostly level, but there’s a slight turn that makes it hard to see your feet in bits.
At the other end of the tunnel, there’s the Chirk Aqueduct, and crossing it takes you into England, yes, Chirk is right on the border, and there’s also the Chirk Viaduct, both of these cross the Ceiriog river.
It was raining by this point, so we wandered back into town looking for somewhere for lunch, we headed for a place we’d identified in our initial scouting trip yesterday, the “Castle Bistro”, and I had a very good pork belly roast with mash and veg, and Gayle had fish cakes with spring onion mash.
For dessert I opted for the bread and butter pudding, while Gayle had a Bakewell tart.
I opted for a Wrexham brewery lager, it was a fairly innocuous lager.
We headed back to the van in the rain, we watched an old Michael Crichton directed-film called Looker, which was definitely a more interesting premise than the film produced, a sandwich and crisps accompanied by some beer was dinner for the night, and the van was definitely rocking in storm Isha.
