Friday 3rd November 2023
We didn’t quite have a month off after our travels, but this was our first planned weekend since our November trip.
We’re now into the long dark nights and short days, we arrived at Luss in darkness, and pitched up.
I had opted not to pay an extra £15 a night for a lochside pitch, so we were on pitch 59, right beside the toilet block, which we didn’t mind.
We reversed in (as usual) and had a good view of the loch anyway.
We had collected some food on our way to Loch Lomond in a bid to keep it a bit healthier on our travels, so we filled a couple of glasses of wine, and popped some pasta on.
Dinner was great, and we had a relaxing evening in the van, work is hectic for both of us, so it was nice to relax a bit.
The A82 runs parallel to the site, and if I’m honest, it was noisy, it did get a bit quieter late on, and we slept well enough.
Up early, and a nice bircher yoghurt, and a wander into the beautiful village of Luss, it was pretty quiet, just a few tourists wandering around snapping themselves on the pier.
We had been on the opposite side of the loch, at Milarocchy Bay at the end of June, and the weather was actually slightly better in November than June, bearly any wind and no rain.
We passed through Luss, on down the road for a bit, but we were starting to get hungry, so returned to Luss and tried to find somewhere for food, we ended up in The Village Rest, it’s deceptively large inside, and we had the soup and wrap deal, and I had a pint of Belhaven Black, very nice!
We returned to the van, via the Village Shop, and had a relaxing evening watching a bit of TV.
Up fairly early, and it might have rained overnight, hard to tell, but after a shower (the facilities were ok, the showers weren’t very good), and we headed off fairly early to Balloch, it was Market Sunday again, but we passed through the Shores area, and onto Balloch Country Park, and it was a really great find, it’s a lovely park, with a castle, walled garden, and lots of trees, the hill with the castle has great views out over Loch Lomond.
We had a great time looking at the trees, identifying some unusual things (witch hazel), but headed back to the loch side for lunch, the salt ’n’ chilli chicken and chips and onions and curry sauce was great!
Picked up a couple of brownies, before heading back home.
Luss is definitely picturesque, but there’s not a lot to it, and while there are some nice wee walks, there are better spots to pitch up.
The site was fine, a bit noisy, and the facilities could be better, but otherwise, it was fine for “winter” in Scotland.
Last year, we got away 3 times in November, and then didn’t go away in December, and then not again ’til late Janunary, and we’ll see what happens this winter.
