This was the start of our Yorkshire tour, which is really only small part of Yorkshire, as we didn’t even get to the coast!
We were up bright and early on Saturday, Gayle was getting over COVID (tested negative on the Monday), and we finished loading the van and set off at 9:40am, we needed fuel, so…dilemma…do we go somewhere local, grab breakfast, and fuel the van too, or do we try and get to Moffat, and eat in one of the many great eateries in the square?
We opted to head for Moffat down the M74, made good time (and a deep in the yellow fuel warning), and fuelled up, we then popped into Cafe Ariete for breakfast, we both opted for the “Big One” and it was worth it, great food, hot, fantastic black pudding (last we’d get for a while) and a good cup of coffee too!
We headed back on the road, and turned off at Junction 40 of the M6 (Penrith), for a change we weren’t heading to Keswick, but we bounced down some hair-raising roads (including a likely wrong turn) and eventually got to Hawes around 2pm.
The site was surprisingly close to full, we pitched up on Pitch 10, and got the van nice and level, before wandering into Hawes, very picturesque little town, but very busy with vehicles of all sorts.
Part of the reason for going to Hawes is that it’s beside the small village of Gayle, and so we got the obligatory photos of Gayle in Gayle, popped our heads into the very busy Wensleydale Creamery, earmarked it for a return, and then wandered into the Crown for a cold pint of Guinness and an Inch’s cider.
Popped into the Spar across the road, which was a bit uninspiring, and then into Elijah Allen’s, which is great, we picked up some bits and pieces for a late snack, and breakfast and returned to the site to sit out for a while reading with cans of the great Campervan Brewery Leith Juice and Mimosa.
Hawes CAMC is a nice site, but is split by the entrance road, and the facilities block is on one side only, it does have a handy shop, and it definitely handy for Hawes.
