First Year in the Van

Celebrating one year with our camper van!

The trip to Callander was exactly a year after our first trip in the van.

We’ve been to twenty four sites in a year, one of those twice.

The trip to Callander was our 28th and 29th nights away in the van in 2023 alone!

As Gayle says, it has helped us discover our country, and given us the freedom to nip away at the weekend to discover places we wouldn’t normally go to.

We’ve done a fair bit of walking, discovered a lot of wee places in Scotland, and our list of places we still want to go is getting longer rather than shorter.

We’ve been aiming for getting away every second weekend, and we’ve got bookings up to late September already.

In the twelve months of owning the van, we’ve replaced some early purchases, added some gadgets, and settled on some dishes and other regularly used bits.

We made it away every month except for December (and we were away the weekend of the 25th of November) and our January getaway was when it was -5C overnight and the van was comfortable.

We’ve gotten packing the van down to a fine art, prepping stuff before we go, and tearing down, in our May tour, we did five sites in nine nights.

We’ve made it as far as the north of England, seen Hadrian’s wall, and roman ruins in Scotland too.

We’ve got a week booked in Yorkshire, hopping around some sites.

In November 2022, we were at Moffat for the second time, and we sat in Brodies and enjoyed reminiscing over the year with a cocktail or two.

It’s hard to pick our favourite sites, Moffat is great, handy for the town, and an easy drive down the M74.

The weekend we went to Drummohr was memorable for the walks into Musselburgh and Portobello.

The saturday night we spent in Killin was memorable, it was warm, and we sat out ’til quite late supping on wine.

This year, Milton of Fonab was great, Beadnell Bay and Tantallon at North Berwick are highlights.

But honestly, we’ve enjoyed all the sites we’ve been to, picking out “best sites” is hard.

We’ve got plenty booked, and we’re starting to look at longer-range trips for next year, there are just so many places we want to go…

Looking forward to another year of getting away!
